Water Source

Palmer is located in the center of the bountiful Matanuska Valley, 42 miles northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. It lies at approximately 61d 36m N Latitude, 149d 06m W Longitude and the area encompasses 3.7 sq. miles of land. The source water bottled by Purely Alaskan Water, Inc. originates from the City of Palmer’s Well #4, which is located approximately half a mile from the water processing plant.  This water is natural at this wellhead, as it exceeds current FDA quality standards at the source.  The wellhead is under 24-hour surveillance and is also protected by fencing and housing from the general public.  The City of Palmer regulates the use of this wellhead and strictly controls the utilization of it.

Palmer, Alaska

The aquifer that supplies the well is remnant of the last ice age.  About 14,000 years ago, the Palmer area was covered by an ice sheet at least 2,500 feet thick.  Nearly 2,000 years later, the ice began to recede as the climate warmed.  Today the aquifer is continually supplied by seasonal precipitation and runoff water from the Knik, Colony, and Matanuska Glaciers.  These glaciers are all that remain of the ice sheet that once covered Palmer.
